Tuning 101

“Tuning” is just calibrating how the ECU responds to load and RPM. You’re adjusting tables so the engine gets the right fuel and timing for each operating condition.

Two big categories

Fueling

How much fuel the ECU commands at each load/RPM cell.

AFR targets + corrections

Ignition

When the spark occurs (timing) at each load/RPM cell.

Power + knock control

Closed-loop vs open-loop

Closed-loop means the ECU uses O2 feedback to correct fueling. Open-loop means it follows the map without feedback (common in WOT or certain conditions). Knowing which mode you’re in matters.

Logging (how to not get lost)

  1. Make one change.
  2. Do the same test (same gear, similar temps, similar conditions).
  3. Compare logs: before vs after.
  4. If it got worse, revert. Don’t “stack guesses.”

A simple safe workflow

What you need (minimum kit)

Logging tool

Something that records RPM, load, temps, fueling, and timing.

Wideband (recommended)

So you can see AFR instead of guessing.

Knock awareness

Use ECU knock data if available; otherwise be conservative.

Patience

Tuning is discipline. Rushing is how parts get expensive.
